Chemex is an iconic coffee maker created by chemist Peter Schlumbohm in 1941. Its elegant hourglass design is not only beautiful but functional — thick paper filters provide an exceptionally clean cup.
What You'll Need
- 6-cup Chemex
- 30 grams freshly roasted coffee
- 500 ml water (93-96°C)
- Scale and timer
- Gooseneck kettle
Step-by-Step Recipe
1. Preparation (0:00)
Fold the filter and place it in the Chemex with the triple-folded side toward the spout. Rinse with hot water and discard.
2. Bloom (0:00 — 0:45)
Add ground coffee and pour 60 ml of water in circular motions. Let the coffee "bloom" for 45 seconds.
3. Main Pour (0:45 — 3:00)
Slowly add water in a spiral pattern from center to edges. Maintain water level 2-3 cm above the coffee bed.
4. Finish
Total brew time should be 4-4:30 minutes. Remove the filter and enjoy!
